UM begins planning for pool replacement
Aging Joyce Fromson Pool closed until further notice
The University of Manitoba has begun planning for a pool replacement, following the closure of the Joyce Fromson Pool earlier this spring.
A leak was discovered on April 8, requiring the university to urgently close the facility. A thorough assessment of the pool, which has served the UM community for 60 years, revealed that it has reached the end of its lifespan and is no longer viable. The unexpected closure resulted in the cancellation of swim programming for the spring and summer seasons. The pool will remain closed while planning for its replacement is underway.
The university is actively exploring options for replacing the pool. We are also working on interim solutions to support ongoing training needs for our high-performance programs during this closure.
This unexpected closure impacts multiple user groups, including approximately 6,500 Mini U campers, 500 swim lesson participants, recreational pool times through Recreation Services, the Bisons swim team and Junior Bisons swim programs. All affected participants have been directly contacted with updates, refund information and details on alternative programming where applicable.
UM remains committed to offering high-quality swim programming and will continue to update the community as more information becomes available about replacing the Joyce Fromson Pool.
