Studying in the Elizabeth Dafoe Library

Top 5 #umstudyspaces

December 15, 2014 —

Last week we shared some study spots around the Fort Garry Campus, and asked umanitoba students for their favourite #umstudyspaces on Instagram. Nearly every faculty in nearly every building has some fantastic options. Below you’ll find the top five locations, in no particular order.

Elizabeth Dafoe Library

There are many study spots in the University of Manitoba’s largest library. The Elizabeth Dafoe Library offers everything from a coffee shop vibe with caffeinated study fuel, lots of natural light, and even isolated nooks and crannies.

The E.K. Williams Law Library

The E.K. Williams Law Library, on the top floor of Robson Hall has lots of natural light and great views of the Red River.
If you’re looking for peace and quiet The E.K. Williams Law Library in Robson Hall is a great place to start. The study space has lots of natural light too with great views of the Red River.

ARTlab

The spaces in ARTlab can be quiet, however sitting in the same location for an extended period requires stamina.
Here’s another great study space with a few different options. Comfort is a bit limited in ARTlab however, since you only have hard plastic chairs or concrete to sit on.

Sciences and Technology Library

The Sciences and Technology Library and its foyer is another popular study space to hit the books.
The Sciences and Technology Library and its foyer is another popular study space to hit the books. This space also has lots of natural light.

EITC

The Engineering & Information Technology Complex has great spaces for group work.
There are many spaces in the Engineering & Information Technology Complex suitable for small groups where a moderate amount of noise is acceptable. Quiet spaces to hunker down and focus on your own are abundant as well.

The new asper School of Business Sony quiet area, as well as the area in the Robert Cohen library is exceptional! I think it should be on this list as well. Due to the underwhelming numbers of students in business compared to Arts (dafoe), and Science, i understand why people didn’t vote for it. Also, it should be noted that the Asper School of business has a reputation of being, well; Business student only friendly.

When I was a student at U of M my favorite spot was the Dafoe location from above! I used to love studying there looking out the window across from Governor House or whatever it was called. Was so nice at this exact time of year leading up to Christmas especially when it would be snowing outside. And then there was the long gone 229 Engineering study hall where we used to hold the real Beer Olympics. It’s great big tables were nice for doing assignments with friends.
