St. Paul’s College honours members at 2019 Celebration of Giving and Sharing

The inaugural Ignatian Society Magis Prizes awarded at the annual open house event

December 13, 2019 —

On November 26th, five members of the St. Paul’s College community were honoured with the inaugural Ignatian Society Magis Prizes at the 2019 Celebration of Giving and Sharing.

Established over a decade ago, the Celebration of Giving and Sharing is one of St. Paul’s College’s premier open house event. During the evening the contributions of our alumni, supporters, donors, volunteers, students, staff and faculty are acknowledged and celebrated. The Celebration of Giving and Sharing occurs each Fall before the start of Advent.

St. Paul’s College’s new Chaplin, Fr. Colin Peterson presided over Vespers in Christ the King Chapel to start the evening off. Doors to Hanley Hall opened where Musician Richard Boughton and Friends serenaded the guests, as they were served a special menu from the Belltower Café. During the event the four Inaugural Ignatian Society Magis prizes were presented.

Mr. Thomas P. Dooley (SPC ’65, ’69) was honoured with the inaugural Magis Prize for Influence and Leadership. Dooley was selected for his participation and passion in his area of expertise and for serving the community in various leadership capacities. Dooley has been an active leader both in the College community and within the broader Manitoba community since the 1960s.

Although unable to attend the event, Justice Kimberly Prost (SPC ’78, ’81) will receive the Magis Prize for Peace and Reconciliation. Prost was selected for her dedication and break-through leadership in the field of law, peace, and justice. Throughout her time at the University of Manitoba, Prost was an engaged and active student member of St. Paul’s College and served as Vice Stick on the St. Paul’s College Students’ Association.

Dr. Nichole Riese (U of M ’81, ’84) was presented with the Magis Prize for Service for Others. Riese received the Magis Prize for her contribution to serving those most vulnerable in remote areas of our country, in other global communities and also in the core areas of our city, making our world a better place.

Co-Founders of the Near Eastern and Biblical Archaeology Laboratory (NEBAL), Dr. Haskel and Dr. Tina Greenfield (SPC ’92, ’97) were presented with the Magis Prize for Ingenuity and Innovation for their resilience and holistic approach to their field of archaeological research.

Nominated and presented by the St. Paul’s College Ignatian Society Council, a Magis (From the Latin word, meaning “more” or “greater”) Prize is gifted to an individual or group who is a part of the College’s community and have demonstrated doing for more for Christ, consequently doing more for others in the areas of community development, international peace education, influence and leadership, and service for others.

The Magis Prizes were presented by Ignatian Stick, Jeremy Semchyshyn (SPC ’19), and Braeden Cornick (SPC ’17) on behalf of the Ignatian Society. The St. Paul’s College Ignatian Society is made up of former student council members and College leaders. The Celebration of Giving and Sharing is one of two community events that the Society now hosts for the College in their continuing expanding role.
