Sexual Violence Resource Centre remains open to UM community

Services continue to be offered remotely during COVID-19 pandemic

August 13, 2020 —

As the university works toward a gradual return to campus, the Sexual Violence Resource Centre remains open and accessible to all in the UM community.

“The needs of those we are supporting shifted significantly once social distancing started,” says Courtney Klassen, the SVRC’s confidential intake and triage specialist. “The quarantine has created many more barriers to accessing resources and meeting basic needs. That’s why we are still open and continue to provide services during this time.”

Staff are available for consultations and confidential appointments over the phone at various times of day, and appointments can be made by phone or email.

Anybody from the UM community can access the Centre: those who have experienced sexual violence themselves, or those who want to support someone who has. Staff can help with assessing needs, clarifying options, identifying next steps, and coordinating a plan to support those directly affected by sexual violence or who are supporting someone they are concerned for.

All services are confidential, and staff will not pressure anyone to take any particular course of action. Choice is very important, so that the person accessing support understands the next steps in the process and that the Centre’s role is to support them through that process.

Students, faculty and staff who need support can reach the Sexual Violence Resource Centre by emailing svrc [at] umanitoba [dot] ca, or by calling 204-474-6562. Emails and phone calls are received Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. For immediate 24/7 sexual violence support, call the Klinic Sexual Assault Crisis Line anytime at 1‑888‑292‑7565.
