Science Rendezvous 2018 delightfully messy

May 15, 2018 —

Four thousand attendees, three hundred pounds of cornstarch, one thousand servings of liquid nitrogen ice cream, and six hundred bags of popcorn, Science Rendezvous 2018, held Saturday, May 12 at the University of Manitoba, Fort Garry campus was a tactile extravaganza! The annual Canada-wide science festival, a marquee event of NSERC Science Odyssey Week, delivered yet again on its promise to make science hands-on-fun, and as planned things got delightfully messy.

It was full STEAM ahead with art playing a central role in the theme of this year’s event, which featured 50+ exhibits and live shows. Beautiful works of art were crafted at the messy paper marbling station led by Janet Carol. The Advanced Potions Chemistry Class, a-la Hogwarts School of Wizardry stupefied six hundred and fifty muggles. The incredible Feats of Physics Show amazed over eight hundred people, with its death defying bed of nails. Faces were painted, bottle rockets were launched into the bright blue sky, and the warm spring afternoon sunshine helped to create beautiful cyanotype Mother’s Day cards.

Science Rendezvous 2018 was made possible by the efforts of over five hundred student volunteers from the University of Manitoba, the University of Winnipeg, Universite de Saint-Boniface, and Red River College. It was coordinated by STEAM UManitoba in collaboration with the Faculty of Science, Faculty of Engineering, Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth and Resources; Faculty of Agriculture and Food Sciences; Faculty of Arts; Faculty of Fine Arts; Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management. Let’s Talk Science, WiseKidnetic, and Create H20.

Sponsors included: Manitoba Institute for Materials (MIM)Natural Resources Institute, Artists EmporiumThe University of Manitoba Science Students AssociationSage Garden Greenhouses, WinnipegPassJacobs Trading, Winnipeg Public Library, Sobeys St. Vital, and  Sobeys St. Anne’s.

Next year’s activities are already being planned so save the date, the next Science Rendezvous will be Saturday, May 11, 2019! The event would not be possible without the help of our many volunteers and support of our sponsors. If you are interested in being involved in 2019, please contact Seema Goel, Outreach and STEAM Coordinator, Faculty of Science.
