Resistance training study seeks participants 65-plus

March 28, 2019 —

Too old for muscle gains? Think again.

A study at the University of Manitoba is seeking healthy men, aged 65-plus, to engage in a 12-week resistance training routine.

The purpose of the study is to determine whether or not blood flow restricting bands—coupled with resistance exercise—increase blood markers associated with muscle growth.

“What we’re trying to find out with this research is whether the production of blood proteins called myokines are changed with an acute bout of resistance exercise with blood flow restriction when going from an untrained to a trained state in older men,” says the study’s primary investigator, Dr. Stephen Cornish, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management, University of Manitoba.

The study needs healthy men who aren’t currently adhering to regular resistance training routine. The commitment required is approximately 40 hours spread over 14 weeks.
