New Waste Reduction and Management Plan in development

UM community invited to participate in waste reduction and management survey

November 2, 2020 —

The University of Manitoba is committed to operating an efficient campus that is continually working to be more sustainable. As part of the Sustainability Strategy 2019-2023, the Office of Sustainability is developing a Waste Reduction & Management Plan (WRMP), which will help UM work toward a zero-waste system.

Addressing waste streams on all UM campuses, the WRMP focuses on both the reduction and management of waste, including collection infrastructure, marketing and education surrounding responsible waste management. It will aim to support a significant reduction in waste generated by the university, increase landfill diversion rates and reduce the amount of contamination found in each stream. The WRMP’s goals will help shape a new culture of closed-loop waste management operations at UM.

But first, the Office of Sustainability wants to hear from you.

Meeting waste reduction targets not only requires research and innovation, but also partnerships within our campus community — from staff and faculty to students and businesses. To help achieve our targets and zero-waste vision, the UM community is invited to exchange ideas, weigh-in on concerns and provide feedback on the proposed plan through our WRMP survey.

Why participate in the survey?

Your voice will help shape the development of specific goals, targets, frameworks and processes of sustainable development at UM. With the survey results, we are sooner able to make progress and positive change, as well as meet the needs of the UM community. Future generations rely on the informed decisions we make on our 2020 sustainable development agenda.

Survey is available November 2 – 20.
