Megatrends in GIS – GISday 2020

Updated October 16, 2020

The new date for this year’s GISday is November 18, after being postponed from its original date of March 19. Hosted by UM Libraries, this year’s virtual event focuses on Megatrends in Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are computer and mobile based systems used to capture, store, manage, analyze, use and display spatial or geographic data. Whether you realize it or not, geographic information systems are an important part of modern life—from real-estate selection to improved communication between emergency vehicles, from analyzing archaeological evidence to managing road maintenance. Almost any discipline can benefit from GIS.

GISday provides an international forum for users of this technology to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in our society.

Presenters from across North America will demonstrate GIS tools that speed GIS analysis at a fraction of the cost incurred from traditional methods in areas such as:

  • Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV)
  • Real-time and near-real time data
  • Big remote sensing data
  • 3D mapping and modeling
  • Advanced spatial statistics
  • Machine learning algorithms

GISday is free and open to anyone to register.

More about GIS and GIS Day

With GIS, researchers can monitor trends and see what is happening in geographic space via electronic maps and 3D views, communicating information pertinent to specific locations.

The first formal GIS Day took place in 1999. Esri president and co-founder Jack Dangermond credits Ralph Nader with being the person who inspired the creation of GIS Day. He considered GIS Day a good initiative for people to learn about geography and the uses of GIS. He wanted GIS Day to be a grassroots effort and open to everyone to participate. gisday.com

GIS has emerged as an important technology for decision-making and analysis and has wide-spread use in many applications.
