Gowns for Grad campaign challenges social inequality during high school graduation

Donate your dresses today

February 9, 2016 —

High school graduation is often a time of celebration, but some students aren’t able to afford all the costs associated with attending graduation. Gowns for Grad is a city-wide campaign that aims to address this inequality. This year, the university community can donate through an awareness campaign and gown drive organized by Praxis: Service-Learning for Social Change.

The Gowns for Grad campaign collects gently used dresses and accessories, and then sets up a free graduation shopping experience where female high school graduates can shop for all their grad needs. The aim of the campaign is to ensure that every girl can partake in graduation celebrations, regardless of their socioeconomic status.

In past years, Praxis has put on bake sales and fashion shows to raise awareness of the event. This year, they will be running a booth in front of the Gallery of Student Art (GoSA) in University Centre from February 21 to 27. The university community is encouraged to stop by to drop off clothing and to learn more about Gowns for Grads.

Dresses, shoes and accessories can also be dropped off throughout February at 225 University Centre or 203 FitzGerald Building between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Praxis is a service-learning program open to all students at the University of Manitoba. Praxis uses hands-on service projects, reflection and critical thinking to help students learn about community development and social justice in Winnipeg. Gowns for Grad is a worthwhile campaign that Praxis has been involved in for the past four years.

    Hi,
I am wondering if I can still donate dresses? I have a number of dresses that I would love to donate, but wanted to find out if this is still happening?
    Thanks
    Debbie

      Hi Debbie,
Gowns for Grads happens every year so you’ll be able to donate again in the near future. Unfortunately, due to limited storage space, we cannot accept your dresses at this time. Maybe inquire with praxis [at] umanitoba [dot] ca about where they bring the dresses and perhaps you could drop it off directly.
