Get to know the Department of Biological Sciences

November 21, 2024 —

At the Department of Biological Sciences, students have the opportunity to not only study living organisms but also learn skills such as data literacy and science communication that will serve them well in whatever career path they choose.

“Biological sciences is for everyone. Doesn’t matter your background, [or] your experience level coming to this department, you will learn and get the skills you need and be surrounded by unique perspectives where we really work to foster that collaboration between instructors and students or peers, not just in the classroom, but outside of the classroom”, says Dr. Cassandra Debets.

Debets, an instructor at Biological Sciences, tells us that bringing in different perspectives and understanding how different people approach and solve problems differently is certainly a priority at the department. When talking with Dr. Gary Anderson, professor and department head at Biological Sciences, we learn how equity, diversity and inclusion are embedded in all areas of the department.

“As a biologist, we have the opportunity to work from the level of the cell up to the ecosystem. And so that diversity throughout life gives us the opportunity to embrace equity, diversity and inclusion,” says Dr. Gary Anderson.

Fascinating research takes place at the Faculty of Science. Dr. Mark Belmonte, professor at Biological Sciences tells us that researchers are leaders at the University of Manitoba and can provide students with various opportunities.

“… We can provide students with an opportunity to thrive, with an opportunity to be able to spark that curiosity in science and be able to make those discoveries and apply those discoveries into a profession that will be able to last a lifetime”, says Dr. Mark Belmonte.
