First-day enrolment highest on record

September 10, 2015 —

Student enrolment for the first day of classes at the University of Manitoba was 29,691 students, the highest number in the history of the institution. These students represent three quarters of all of Manitoba’s full-time-equivalent university students, and half of the province’s post-secondary students. This is also the third consecutive year enrolment has exceeded 29,000 students on the first day of classes.

“We are pleased to welcome the thousands of students who are choosing the University of Manitoba for their post-secondary training. Today, students have a growing number of career opportunities and an equally expansive array of academic programming available to them. They require learning opportunities that are innovative, immersive and interactive, preparing them for work environments now and into the future. Here at the University of Manitoba, we continue to offer a student experience that is among the best in Canada,” says David Barnard, president and vice-chancellor.

Graduate students contribute greatly to intellectual capital in Manitoba, helping to drive innovation. Their enrolment rose 7.3 per cent from last year to a total of 3,546 students. The majority of graduate students at the U of M remain in Manitoba following graduation.

The U of M remains the post-secondary institution of choice for international students in Manitoba. The number of students from outside Canada in the 2015 fall term reached an all-time high of 4,692 students. Undergraduate international enrolment increased 10.8 per cent and graduate international enrolment rose 12.4 per cent.

Several faculties reported increases in enrolment this fall, including Arts (2.8 per cent), Architecture (7.0 per cent), Engineering (3.8 per cent), Science (9.4 per cent), Law (3.2 per cent) and Social Work (3.9 per cent).

Total undergraduate enrolment increased by 1.6 per cent, from 25,090 students in the fall of 2014 to 25,498 students this term.

Undergraduate student credit hours increased to 283,968 in the 2015 fall term. Distance and Online Education credit hours continue to increase, climbing 12.1 per cent to 28,851 credit hours.

First-day enrolment numbers are only preliminary, and often change following late enrolment and after faculties submit all their data in coming months.

Great academic institution. As an engineering graduate, I’d say one of the best in Western Canada. The University 1 program really helped me. I am a proud graduate of this wonderful institution. Good luck to both staff and student!

I graduated from the University of Manitoba 1958. I was 20 years old and was the first of my family to attend a university and receive a diploma. In 1958 there were 7,000 students enrolled. My my how things have changed for the better of course. Good luck to all and study Hard.
