CBC Manitoba: U.S. tariffs would have little effect on Canada’s ‘cartelized’ dairy industry, experts say

Canada’s supply management system for dairy, egg and poultry can be a “trade irritant” among the country’s major trading partners, as it excludes similar products made by those partners from the Canadian market, according to Ryan Cardwell, an agricultural economics professor at the University of Manitoba.

“If more American supply-managed products were allowed into Canada, that would result in lower prices and probably wider selection of products in Canada,” he told CBC News. “But to be honest, I don’t really anticipate much of that happening anytime soon.”
