Call for Proposals: C.A.S.T. Researcher-in-Residence Program

The Centre for Architectural Structures and Technology (C.A.S.T.) is a research lab that fosters critical and creative experimentation with design, construction, and performance technologies in the built environment.

The Research in Residence Program at C.A.S.T. supports individuals in pursuing independent, focused research that promotes creativity and innovation in design and construction through hands-on exploration of materials, sustainable practices, and collaboration—benefiting students, professionals, and the environment.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS: C.A.S.T. RESEARCHER-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

  • Open to academic and industry researchers worldwide.
  • Supports independent, focused research in architecture and design.
  • Appointment duration: Flexible (2 weeks to 4 months)

Research Focus

  • Aligned with C.A.S.T.’s core research themes:
  • Material and assembly exploration
  • Experimental building techniques
  • Prototyping and innovation
  • Natural law applications
  • Indigenous modes of making
  • Sustainable practices
  • Creative collaboration and rigorous play

  • FabLab
  • Woodworking and metalworking shops

Opportunities

  • Deliver public lectures
  • Host participatory workshops (open to students and faculty)
  • Exhibit work in Faculty exhibitions and publications

  • Additional short-term teaching opportunities may be available (negotiable)

Funding

  • Position includes a stipend of up to $11,000 CAD (which can be used to cover transportation costs, living expenses and material costs).
  • Applicants are expected to have some independent funding

PROPOSAL REQUIREMENTS

  • CV or resume
  • Research statement & proposal (max 5 pages; images encouraged)
  • Brief workshop description

SELECTION

Applicants will be reviewed by the C.A.S.T. Committee. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted. International applicants may require a visa—support will be provided upon acceptance.
