Berlin Studio and other highlights from the Faculty of Architecture Year End Exhibition

May 7, 2014 —

On the evening of Friday, April 25, the Faculty of Architecture held its annual Year End Exhibition, a cross-disciplinary exhibition that allows faculty students to display their work to peers, family members, potential students, local professionals and guests.

The annual open house occupied the John A. Russell Building and Architecture 2 Building and was accessible April 25, 28 and 29, providing an opportunity for the public, media and parents to see the creative studio work of Faculty of Architecture environmental design undergraduate students and graduate students in departments of architecture, landscape architecture, interior design and city planning.

Ralph Stern, dean of the Faculty of Architecture, says, “The Faculty of Architecture End of Year Exhibit brings together all of the design efforts and talents of students in our Faculty from their introductory design courses through the professional masters degrees.

“It is an intense, diverse and exciting mix of aesthetics and approaches; an event that is open to the public and at which we frequently find parents understanding at long last why they haven’t seen their sons and daughters for months on end. It is a wonderful event that serves as a annual culmination for the Faculty and as a capstone experience for the students.”

Stern: ‘[The Year End Exhibition] is an intense, diverse and exciting mix of aesthetics and approaches; an event that is open to the public and at which we frequently find parents understanding at long last why they haven’t seen their sons and daughters for months on end.’

Architecture students participate in studio courses throughout the term, in which they combine their technical, theoretical and practical, on-site knowledge and experience.

Stern was part of a team that took studio students to Berlin in January of this school year.

Co-taught by Ralph Stern and Kim Wiese, an instructor in the faculty — both of whom have extensive experience with Berlin — the Berlin Studio course was an interdisciplinary studio focused on riverfront development in an area once occupied by the former Wall in Berlin. The unique studio course presented an opportunity for students to gain in-depth knowledge of one of the preeminent urban centres of the twenty-first century, says Stern.

“The studio was an important experiment in allowing students from across the Environmental Design 4 Options (architecture, interior environments, landscape + urbanism) to work together in teams, sharing their disciplinary expertise to develop projects of remarkable sophistication within the short period of a semester,” he explains.

year_END_2014_InviteUM Today visited the faculty on Friday afternoon as students and faculty members were busily preparing for the evening’s main event.

Here’s a look at the preparations and some of the work on display.

Ed. Note: Due to the scale of this year-end event and the sheer number of displays of (wonderful and interesting) student work, unfortunately it’s not possible to list all of the project information of students whose work is seen here. The photo gallery is intended to give readers a taste of the work on display.

    Hi there,

You should be citing whose work it is you’re posting up here. There is thesis work in the images that deserve names.

      L,
You’re right. I’d be hurt if my life’s work was left faceless and nameless. the story is celebrating the work generally, not specifically though. still, i’m with you, some of the close ups should have names attached.

Yes, the Faculty of Architecture student work certainly deserves credit, and for those who attended the event, the work could be seen in greater detail. This photo gallery is intended simply as an overview of the scope of work by students in the faculty, to give readers a taste of this spectacular — and very large — event.
