Asper Case teams place first and third during weekend competitions

Our Asper undergraduate team took home first place at this year’s Ted Rogers Ethical Leadership Case Competition held virtually on November 14. Hosted by the Ted Rogers Leadership Centre at Ryerson University, the competition is Canada’s largest undergraduate business ethics case competition. 
 
The winning team, Vision Consulting, was represented by students Mia Doan, Tara Flatt, Alexandre Morakis, and Lauren Slegers. Competing against eight other teams, they were required to solve a case that involved ethics and negotiation in the context of private-equity transaction.  

The undergraduate teams received valuable support in their competition preparation by Asper School of Business faculty, staff, alumni and the community including:

“We would not have been able to achieve this incredible end result without the help of each and every one of you,” says Tara Flatt, Vision Consulting team member. “So, on behalf of our team, we would like to say a huge thank you for all for the time, expertise, and knowledge you provided to help us in our preparation.” 
 
While our undergrads were busy competing, so were MBA students Meycee Kawla-Crevier, Martin Riddell, Muhammad Umar Farooq, and Abhas Deodhiya. Their team, Eureka, took third place at the virtual DeGroote Innovative Solutions Case Competition.  
 
Along with fellow MBA team, Aspire, they spent the week solving a challenging case involving the commercialization of COVID-19 test kits. Both teams had strong presentations and faced tough competition from competing schools including Schulich, Ryerson, and John Molson. Despite the challenges of the competition being online, Eureka team member Meycee Kalaw-Crevier says the virtual setting enabled a more flexible approach.  
 
“As a team, we were able to go quickly from one activity to the next and found creative ways in using technology effectively,” says Kalaw-Crevier. “We had frequent virtual meetings where we tried to get to know each other on a personal level while solving our cases. As a result, we fostered stronger trust with one another and it enabled us to become a more cohesive team.” 
 
Once again, our MBA teams were supported by Asper faculty and staff members Judy Jayasuriya, Arly Akerstream, and Aditya Kedia. They were also supported by alumni Matt Borgford [MBA/20] and Francis Lagadi [MBA/17], staff member and UM alum Raman Dhaliwal, and community members Joshua Titus and Erin Schillberg.
