UMSU Centennial Speaker Series – Laverne Cox

Wednesday, September 18

Time: 11 AM – 2 PM

Location: MPR on the 2nd floor of UMSU University Centre

The University of Manitoba Students’ Union (UMSU) is proud to welcome celebrated equal rights advocate and Emmy Award-winning actress and producer, Laverne Cox, to the University of Manitoba campus on September 18.

Renowned for her ground-breaking role as transgender African American woman “Sophia Burset” on Orange is the New Black, Cox is a major voice driving transgender awareness and equality, and continues to make historical accomplishments in her career and significant strides in her activism advocating for positive change.

As the first trans woman of colour to be cast in a leading role on a mainstream scripted television show, her list of ‘firsts’ also include being the first trans woman on the cover of TIME Magazine, as well as the first trans woman of colour to produce and star in her own television show: VH1’s TRANSForm Me.

Laverne will speak on September 18, 2019 at 11:00 AM in the MPR on the 2nd floor of UMSU University Centre.

Through animated reflection on her own transgender experience, Cox spreads her empowering message of self-acceptance, love, and moving beyond gender expectations to respect and appreciate all individuals.
