
Coach Michele Hynes
Alumna and former Bison is new head coach of women’s basketball
Bison Sports is pleased to announce the appointment of Michele Hynes as the Head Coach of the Bison women’s basketball program.
“I’m very excited about being given the opportunity to continue coaching at the University of Manitoba,” Hynes says. “Bison Sports has been extremely supportive in my growth as a coach and I look forward to building a program that the school can be proud of.”
Hynes started her coaching career with the Junior Bisons in 2005 and Big Country Basketball (2010-12). She served as a mentor coach with Skownan First Nations Junior Bisons (2006-2010) and was the rural team coordinator and coach with JRB Basketball (2009). She also served as the Apprentice Coach U17 Manitoba Provincial Team program for the past two summers earning the Bronze medal at the 2013 Canada Summer Games, and she is currently an Assistant Coach with Team Canada’s Paralympic Basketball Team.
“Coach Hynes has demonstrated great leadership as a player, as an assistant coach and as the Interim Head Coach for the past two seasons,” says Bison Sports Athletic Director Coleen Dufresne. “Throughout the search process, Michele displayed a clear vision as well as a high level of expertise and enthusiasm that will be vital for the continued advancement of Bison women’s basketball.”
Hynes completed her five-year university playing career with the Bisons in 2010; she was team captain for three of those years. In the 2009-10 season she received the CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) Sylvia Sweeney Award, which is given to a player who exhibits outstanding achievement in three areas: basketball, academics and community involvement.
She has a Bachelor of Kinesiology from the U of M and is currently enrolled in Faculty of Engineering.
She was named a CIS Academic All-Canadian in 2006-07, an honour given to student athletes who achieve a minimum GPA of 3.5. She was also awarded the 2009 Jim Bulloch Coaching, the 2011-12 Grey Cup Legacy award and was the recipient of a 2012 Women to Watch grant.
