Adele Perry, James Dashchuk receive awards
Congratulations to Adele Perry who won the Hilda Neatby Prize which recognizes the best articles in French and English on women’s history each year.
The Canadian Committee on the History of Women awarded the 2014 English-Language article prize to the following article: Adele Perry, “James Douglas, Amelia Connolly, and the Writing of Gender and Women’s History” (In Catherine Carstairs and Nancy Janovicek, Feminist History in Canada. New Essays on Women, Gender, Work, and Nation. UBC Press, 2013).
Congratulations to James Dashchuk, UM History Alumnus (PhD 2002), who was awarded the 2014 Book Prize by the Aboriginal History Study Group, a committee affiliated with the Canadian Historical Association, for his book Clearing the Plains: Disease, Politics of Starvation, and the Loss of Aboriginal Life. Regina: University of Regina, 2013. This book has won numerous other prizes including the Clio Prize at the CHAs for meritorious contribution to The Prairies regional history.
My newsletter item on the CHA Prizes awarded to History alumnus (PhD 2002) James Dashchuk’s book Clearing the Plains: Disease, Politics of Starvation, and the Loss of Aboriginal Life, failed to mention the most important prize he received (in addition to those in the newsletter), namely the Macdonald Prize.
“The Sir John A. Macdonald Prize is awarded annually to the best scholarly book in Canadian history and is also to be awarded the Governor General Award for Scholarly Achievement at the Annual Governor General History Awards.”
