Women in Academic Leadership: A new program for Canada’s next academic leaders

Oct. 1 to 5, 2018 at The Forks, Winnipeg

June 4, 2018 —

In the world of higher education, women leaders still face unique issues including sexism, implicit bias, and the glass ceiling. While we have made progress, women are still under-represented in senior academic positions.

That’s why the Centre for Higher Education Research and Development (CHERD) created Women in Academic Leadership, a new five-day residential program of workshops and mentorship, to be held from Oct. 1 to 5 at the Inn at The Forks in Winnipeg. Applications are now being accepted.

Women who have achieved an early to mid-level of academic leadership and now have their sights on reaching higher are invited to join the discussion, share ideas, and be a part of this evolution in academic leadership.

Building community and networking
This new professional development program brings the women who will become our next academic leaders together to build their leadership skills as they build a community of women in leadership. They will work together to address important topics like communication and negotiation and changing perceptions related to women in leadership, and build their professional networks. They will set professional goals and learn what makes an effective woman leader.

Mentorship
There’s nothing like learning from someone who has been there. The unique mentorship component of this program connects women with experienced women leaders to inspire and guide them. Mentors will share the rewards and challenges of academic leadership, as women set their sights on reaching higher levels in their careers.
