Waste Reduction Week aims to keep materials out of the landfill

October 16, 2015 —

Did you know that coffee cups are now recyclable on campus? Changes with our recycling processor mean you can now drop your cup in any recycling bin on campus.

Over the summer, the University of Manitoba has made a number of positive changes to our garbage and recycling system. This includes combining all recyclables in one bin, increasing the number of recycling bins on campus and pairing them with all garbage cans to avoid the unfortunate situation where you have something to recycle in your hand, but can only find a garbage can.

These modifications have already lead to big changes. From September 2014-2015, the amount of recycling collected at the U of M increased by 52 per cent.

To keep the momentum going and to celebrate Waste Reduction Week, the Office of Sustainability will be set up in University Centre over the lunch hour on October 19 and 20. Visit their table from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for more information on reducing waste and to drop off recyclables that aren’t accepted in the blue bins such as batteries, ink/toner cartridges, cell phones, charge cords, plastic bags, prescription medication and eyeglasses.

The Office of Sustainability is also running an Instagram photo scavenger hunt where you could win a $150 Bookstore gift card as a prize for capturing four different recycling activities on your Instagram account.

October is Sustainability Month. Each week in October an article on a different sustainability-related theme will be posted on UM Today. Visit the Office of Sustainability website for more information about sustainability on campus. Visit the Sustainability Month website for more information on Sustainability Month events.
