U of M student advisor wins National Academic Advising Association award

The National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) has named Dr. Justin Rasmussen as the winner of the Region 6 Excellence in Advising – New Advisor 2017 award.

Rasmussen, who is Métis and from Ile Des Chênes, Man, is a student advisor at the Indigenous Student Centre (ISC) at the University of Manitoba. In 2014, Rasmussen received his PhD in biological sciences from the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand. He also graduated from the University of Winnipeg with a BSc in geography in 2003, and from the University of Manitoba with a BSc in zoology in 2006, and an MSc in zoology in 2008.

“The Indigenous Student Centre is dedicated to the supporting students in a holistic learning environment. All of our student advisors, including Justin, take this to heart and go above and beyond to create conditions and opportunities for students to thrive. We are all so proud to work with Justin – he is a true leader,” says Christine Cyr, director of the ISC.

NACADA supports quality academic advising in institutions of higher education to enhance the educational development of students.

“The Outstanding New Advisor Awards are presented to individuals who have demonstrated qualities associated with outstanding academic advising of students,” says NACADA.

Rasmussen was nominated for the NACADA award by Carla Loewen, who is also a student advisor at ISC.
