U of M calls for Emerging Leader Award applications

December 10, 2013 —

Students are integral to the pulse of the U of M and the impact of the university on our community. They volunteer to coordinate key events and student-run programs, create positive change both locally and abroad and help and mentor others. Established in 2006, the Emerging Leader Award (ELA) is an important way to recognize student leaders who make outstanding contributions such as these to the institution and beyond.

The ELA honours up to 75 student leaders every year. Selected students receive a certificate of recognition and an invitation to attend the annual Emerging Leaders Dinner, this year featuring world-renowned astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson. The event brings together ELA recipients, faculty, staff and members of the community to celebrate student accomplishments and leadership, leaving a lasting impression on participants.

“Being at the Emerging Leaders Dinner will remain one of my most vivid university memories,” says Cameron MacGregor, 2013 ELA winner and fifth year engineering student. “It symbolizes exactly what I feel university should be about.”

Another student honoured in 2013, fourth year Asper School of Business student Deanna Mirlycourtois, agrees, adding it’s “a great opportunity to meet and be inspired by like-minded students who are making a difference on the U of M campus.”

The awards are open to all current full- or part-time U of M undergraduate and graduate students with a minimum 2.5 GPA, in any faculty, school or program that:

  • Supports the university’s educational mission by contributing to the social, cultural or economic well-being of communities on or off campus.
  • Encourages cross-cultural understanding.
  • Demonstrates sustained leadership and initiative that is worthy of recognition.

If you’re a student who meets the above criteria or know someone who is, please note the following submission deadlines:

  • Student Applications: Friday, January 10, 2014 at 4:30 p.m.
  • Letters of Support: Friday, January 17, 2014 at 4:30 p.m.
