The Faculty of Graduate Studies Hosts Three-Minute-Postdoc Competition – Winners Announced!
The faculty of graduate studies recently hosted the second annual Three Minute Postdoctoral Competition (3MP) showcasing the cutting-edge research being conducted by postdoctoral fellows at UM. The event that took place on September 20th, during National Postdoctoral Appreciation Week was well attended by faculty, students, postdoctoral fellows and community members who were eager to learn about the research presented.
In this competition, the challengers had just three minutes each to present their innovative work using only one static slide. The format emphasized clarity, engagement and the ability to share their complex ideas into an easy-to-understand format for the non-specialized audience.
This event featured eight challengers from food science, medical microbiology and infectious diseases, electrical and computer engineering, occupational therapy, physiology and pathophysiology and law. A full listing of all challengers can be found on the 3MP Website.
After all challengers presented, the panel of judges comprised of Loren Oschipok, Director, Partnerships, Knowledge Mobilization and Innovation, Iain Cozier, Director, Programs, North Forge and Anam Ara, PhD Candidate and current UM 3MT winner selected the three winners:
1st Place: Carmine Slipski – Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. Carmine’s research title is Development of a rapid saliva test for detection of oral health.
2nd Place : Titus Olukitibi – Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. Titus’s research title is Immune markers associated with the natural clearance of HPV
3rd place: Abhay Srivastava – Physiology and Pathophysiology. Abhay’s research title is Nanotechnology can direct cellular fuel burn and fight inflammation!!!
Dr. Mario Pinto, Vice President Research and International presented the awards for these three winners.
The audience both live and through the live stream were invited to participate in the judging by casting their votes for the People’s Choice Award, presented by Dr. Kelley Main, which was won by the judge’s 2nd place winner, Titus Olukitibi!
The success of the 3MP competitions has sparked excitement for future events. Dr. Kelley Main, the dean of the faculty of graduate studies and host of this event noted the importance of showcasing postdoctoral talent: “We aim to continue providing platforms for innovative opportunities for postdocs to present their research to the greater UM audience. “
