Stay current: Researcher Workshops by the U of M Libraries

Enhance your technical expertise, expand your research presence with these fall and winter workshops

September 7, 2016 —

From staying current with research in your field to data management and journal metrics, from mapping and stats tools to open access publishing, ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) and useful tools such as SciVal, technology is becoming a major factor in research and research funding.

After a successful pilot program this spring, University of Manitoba Libraries will again be offering workshops to help faculty, instructors, grad students and other researchers advance their research skill sets. The Researcher Workshop series has been designed to meet the research needs of faculty and researchers, and these sessions will be beneficial to those looking to learn more about emerging issues such as data management and research metrics, and their influence on research.

Though fairly new in the field of research, these and similar technical topics are likely to continue to grow, and to have a larger impact on research going forward.

The workshops are open to all researchers and faculty, and will provide new ways for participants to enhance their technical expertise and expand their research presence. For example, by learning more about Open Access, participants can increase the discoverability of their research, and also become more familiar with the expectations of various funding agencies.

A full schedule and list of topics can be found below.

Wednesday, September 14, 2016, 12:00pm – 1:00 pm

Open Access and Funder Requirements

Map Analysis and Publishing Using ArcGIS Desktop
Brown Lab; Elizabeth Dafoe Library
Quite often researchers need to analyze geospatial data and create maps for publication. In this workshop, analyze the proximity of parks to residents in nearby Winnipeg neighbourhoods using an imagery basemap, the 2011 National Housing Survey data, and the ArcGIS Proximity toolset. Prepare your map for publication using a variety of mapping tools.

Manage Your Author Identity with ORCID

ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) is an international registry of persistent digital identifiers to connect authors and creators to all their research and scholarly works. The ORCID identifier helps to solve the problems of common names, misattributions, and multiple affiliations over a career. This workshop will help you get registered and start populating your ORCID account. We will also look at two other popular researcher identifiers that work with ORCID: Author Identifier from Scopus and ResearcherID that integrates with Web of Science.
