Robotic arm grabs attention at Fort Garry campus

Take Our Kids to Work Day demonstrates unique career options

November 20, 2018 —

A robotic arm really seized the imagination of Aidan McLeod, a grade 9 student from Sturgeon Heights Collegiate, when he visited FabLab, the fabrication laboratory in the Faculty of Architecture.

McLeod was one of 47 students who visited the Fort Garry campus for the annual, national Take Our Kids to Work Day on Nov. 14. The event gives grade 9 students a glimpse into the working world, and helps them to make connections between their education and future careers and understand the importance of staying in school. The event also highlights the diversity of careers at the University of Manitoba.

“I like solving problems,” adds McLeod, who wants to pursue a career in information technology.

In addition to trying out the robotic arm, students had a chance to dissect a cow’s eye, plan a recreation program, cook a meal, handle 3D proteins and build a business. In total, nine different faculties showcased their areas of expertise to the students.

Human resources would like to thank the following faculties for participating in this year’s event at the Fort Garry campus: Agricultural and Food Sciences, Architecture, Arts, Asper School of Business, Engineering, Environment, Earth and Resources, Kinesiology and Recreation Management, Physical Plant, and Science.

If a department and/or faculty would like to host a workshop at next year’s event, please contact Lindsay Menard, confidential assistant, advertising assistant and HR office manager, human resources, at Lindsay [dot] Menard [at] umanitoba [dot] ca
