Asper team wins inter-collegiate business competition

June 13, 2018 —

Another case competition victory for the Asper School of Business.

Aaron Menon, Marko Gajic and Collin Drosdoski, mentored by Tracey Code, Commercial Lending Manager at RBC, took home first place in the 2018 Commercial Credit Analysis Competition. The competition is held annually at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario.

The prestigious Inter-Collegiate Business Competition (ICBC), challenges the analytical, business education and presentation skills of undergraduate students through an exercise in identifying and mitigating the credit risks that a bank faces when lending to a small business. The participants are required to absorb and analyze complex credit risk information to determine whether a funding request should be approved based on the appropriate funding amount and loan structure.

“These competitions are unique opportunities to our learning experience one normally does not get inside your typical lecture style classroom environment,” says Collin Drosdoski.

The competition is evaluated on three components: a written analysis, the credit decision and oral presentation. The scoring criteria is set up to give credit for the team’s ability to identify a multitude of credit risks within the case and how they are presented to a panel of experienced Commercial Lending Managers and Credit Risk Officers. The event is sponsored by the Risk Management Association along with support from Bank of the West, Blackridge Bank and other corporate sponsors.

The three Asper School of Business students that placed first in the competition won the top prize of $2,500 USD.
