Dr. Douglas Maguire.

Physician to provide critical medical care in Nepal

April 30, 2015 —

A University of Manitoba associate professor in the department of anesthesia is volunteering with the Red Cross to perform disaster relief work in the aftermath of Nepal’s devastating earthquake April 25 that has killed 5500 people. Anesthetist Dr. Douglas Maguire will work at an emergency mobile hospital equipped with 43 tons of equipment, a 50-bed unit, an operating room and medical supplies to last three months. The Red Cross expects the field hospital will be able to serve thousands of people.

Dr. Eric Jacobsohn, Professor and Head, Department of Anesthesia, University of Manitoba said, “Dr. Maguire has for many years been selfless in his dedication to international work. The deployment with the Red Cross is truly humbling and an inspiration to us all.”

Maguire graduated from the University of Manitoba with his MD degree in 1982 and is an anesthetist at Health Sciences Centre and St. Boniface hospitals. He has previously travelled to developing countries to lend a hand on the medical front, but this is the first time as part of a Red Cross team.

Added Dr. Chris Christodoulou, Site Leader, SBH Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Medicine: “Dr. Maguire is an example of a great humanitarian who we have the privilege of working with every day.”
