New tiered rates for visitor parking

New tiered parking rates for visitor parking areas on the Fort Garry Campus will be introduced starting May 1. Hourly parking rates in higher-demand areas on campus will increase in order to promote short-term stays, freeing up space for visitors.

The City of Winnipeg uses similar strategies to encourage longer-term parkers to park in periphery areas where the rates are lower.

The strategy also results in less vehicle congestion in high-demand areas. The following benefits are expected:

• Reduction in environmental impact of vehicles idling while waiting for parking;
• Less traffic congestion in the centre of campus, resulting in improved commuting times; and
• Heightened safety for pedestrians crossing roadways on campus.
