New Copyright Solutions service offered

August 11, 2015 —

As announced in June of this year, the University of Manitoba has chosen to not renew its licence with Access Copyright. Instead, it will coordinate all copied materials under its Fair Dealing Guidelines, which are being developed at the U of M in accordance with current Canadian copyright laws.

To ensure faculty and instructors have the necessary support in applying these new standards, U of M now offers Copyright Solutions, a collaborative service created by the Copyright Office and U of M Libraries.

While the U of M Bookstore remains the primary resource for copyright expertise in the production of print course packs, Copyright Solutions will focus on course content which will be distributed to students through UM Learn.

As copyright coordinator with the Office of Fair Practice and Legal Affairs, Tobe Duggan will work directly with faculty and instructors to confirm that journal articles, book chapters, reports, and visual resources such as artworks, graphics, and videos meet the institution’s copyright guidelines. If required, he is available to research copyright ownership, submit permission requests and process license fees that may be incurred.

As the teaching support librarian, Sarah Clark is the primary library contact for Copyright Solutions. Within this role, she will ensure that faculty are able to maintain copyright compliance when using the Libraries’ resources. Should a work be unavailable for course distribution, Clark can facilitate acquisition of an alternative resource, drawing on a network of library liaisons with subject area expertise. As a whole, the Libraries will ensure that all e-resources made available through UM Learn are accurately and securely linked. Faculty members can also contact Clark for assistance with adding and editing linked content within their UM Learn courses.

Both Duggan and Clark are also available to deliver one-on-one or small group workshops on practical methods for confirming the copyright status of materials, accessing library resources, and of course, how to apply the U of M’s new Fair Dealing Guidelines.
