Heart Garden takes over UM Quad for third annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 

September 28, 2023 — 
310. That’s the number of orange hearts that make up the commemorative heart garden planted in the quad at the University of Manitoba’s Fort Garry campus. Each one represents the memory of a child lost to the residential school system, while also honouring Survivors and offering a commitment to reconciliation.

Promoting healing, education and reflection across the country

September 27, 2023 — 
A member of the Birdtail Sioux Dakota Nation, and an athlete who believes in the power of movement as medicine, UM law student Tréchelle Bunn founded a healing walk in July 2021 which has since grown into the Reconciliation Run, Canada's first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Half Marathon.

The third annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation will take place on September 30. There are many ways you can observe the day, with opportunities both on and off campus to engage in learning and reflection and to honour the healing journey of residential school Survivors.

Access to Success

With Indigenous Homecoming taking place this week, September is also a time to celebrate the success of UM alumni. Over the years, more than 600 students have graduated from the Access Program. These accredited professionals now successfully share their hard-earned skills in communities all across Canada and also right here at UM.

Building connections within the Indigenous campus community

A welcoming space for Indigenous faculty, staff, students, allies and friends across all UM campuses, the 90-minute Indigenous Connect meetings offer a chance for attendees to network, share their work, obtain feedback, and discuss programming, events, policy issues and other matters of importance, like the creation of the recent Indigenous identity policy.

The Indigenous Circle of Empowerment (ICE) is a student leadership development program rooted in culture and focused on personal, educational, and professional development, and community engagement. It provides a diverse range of activities, including conversations with esteemed Indigenous leaders, professional development, learning from Elders and Knowledge Keepers, and collaborative team capstone projects.
