Lounge renovations give students a place to relax

September 11, 2018 —

The student lounge in the Human Ecology Building received a welcome refresh thanks to support from the Department of Food and Human Nutritional Sciences, the Department of Community Health Sciences and the Agricultural and Food Sciences Student Initiative Fund.

At the grand opening event held September 10, greetings were shared by Dr. Jim House, Head, Food and Human Nutritional Sciences; Dr. Sharon Bruce, Acting Head, Community Health Sciences; Dr. Christine Ateah, Vice Dean (Education), Rady Faculty of Health Sciences; Dr. Jared Carlberg, Associate Dean (Academic), Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences; and students Renee Taillieu, representing Community Health Undergraduate Students Organization and the Interdisciplinary Health Program students, and Julie Sprague, president of Nutrition Education and Community Outreach and representative with Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences Student Organization.

At the end of the event, the students cut a red ribbon to officially open the space.

The brightly colored lounge includes modern lighting, tables and chairs for meetings and meals, amenities such as microwaves and charging stations, and a large monitor for presentations. Students from both departments continue to regularly utilize the space for studying, social events and relaxation.

Having graduated in Home Economics in 1956 I am always pleased to read about the progress and changes at the University of Manitoba. I am glad food sciences continue as the knowledge in this field is now more important then ever.
