January marks career month on campus

Month-long effort provides students with opportunities to explore career options

January 5, 2016 —

This month, the University of Manitoba celebrates Career Month by hosting a number of events and opportunities on campus for students and recent grads to explore career possibilities and connect with future employers. “Career Month is designed to raise awareness about career development and highlight the importance of educating students on developing the career management skills necessary to manage learning, work, leisure and transitions over their lifetime,” says Gail Langlais, Director, Career Services.

A kick-off for Career Month will happen on January 7 in University Centre to launch the month-worth of career-focused initiatives on campus.

Career Month activities include workshops on career advice, resume building and networking.  Various employers including Public Health Agency of Canada, Public Service Commission, Deloitte, Canadian Security Intelligence Services and the Communications Security Establishment Canada will be hosting information sessions for students. The Royal Bank of Canada will also be running a session at Migizii Agamik for Indigenous students on how to create an engaging, attention-grabbing and career-worthy presence that recruiters will notice.

The annual Career Fair highlights the month on January 20. Here, students can meet with over 95 employers who are looking to hire for summer and permanent positions. This day-long networking event will also allow students to discover what competencies they need to be hired in their industry of choice. And new to this year’s fair, Alumni Relations will be on-hand to assist students with their LinkedIn profiles, providing free headshots coupled with a workshop offered by Career Services on how students can enhance their professional online presence. To add to the excitement, Alumni Relations in collaboration with the Bank of Montreal will be offering a draw with the chance for one lucky student to win $1,000 toward his or her tuition.

Another popular Career Month activity is the Arts Roundtable, a speed networking event where alumni from the faculty will return to campus to educate students about their career journey and how to remain open to and identify career opportunities.

Career Month is organized and hosted by Career Services. For a complete calendar of Career Month activities, visit the Career Services website.
