Initiative launched to empower youth voices

September 30, 2016 —

The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR) at the University of Manitoba, in partnership with the Vice Regal community, has launched the second annual Imagine a Canada national arts and communications initiative.

Imagine a Canada invites young people across Canada to share their vision of the country’s future through the lens of Reconciliation.

“We want young people to share their vision of the future,” said Ry Moran, director of the NCTR. “The youth of today will play a critical role in achieving Reconciliation. We are thrilled to be able to showcase their vision, talent and foresight into where we need to go as a country.”

Imagine a Canada.

Students from kindergarten through undergraduates at post-secondary institutions are encouraged to take their place at the forefront of the conversation on Reconciliation. Students can enter by creating a story, poem, piece of art, short film or essay envisioning a Canada achieving real Reconciliation.

“Reconciliation requires societal change, and engaging young people in this process is key to building an improved relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples,” says David Barnard, President and Vice-Chancellor at the University of Manitoba. “I look forward to hearing the voices of tomorrow’s leaders and learning about their vision for the future of our country through this inspiring Imagine a Canada initiative.”

Ten students will be selected in each province and territory to be featured by the NCTR. A selection committee will then select one finalist from each province and territory to be recognized in a ceremony at Rideau Hall on June 20, 2017.
