Human Resources releases second annual report

Themes include recruitment, professional development and more

May 8, 2018 —

What does our working environment look like? What kinds of people constitute our working community? And, how does our employee recruitment compare to the previous year?

Human Resources invites faculty and staff to explore these types of questions and more in the Human Resources 2017 Annual Report: Our Strength Lies in Our People.

“This is Human Resources’ second annual report and I trust it will add to our community conversations,” says Gregory Juliano, associate vice-president (human resources). “Our goal is to report annually and provide year-over-year data so that we can provide insights and revealing trends.”

The annual report, based on the 2017 calendar year, is organized by eight themes, including diversity and inclusion, recruitment, staff relations and outstanding workplace supports.

In it, readers will discover information such as the number of people in each employment group and each campus, the number of new hires in full-time academic positions and U of M’s low voluntary turnover rate (6.5%).

The report highlights new efforts in human resources, such as creating the Indigenous Advisor position to help recruit Indigenous candidates to the university and the new UM Careers recruitment platform.  The annual event Live Well @Work continues to grow each year, with participation rates increasing by 20 per cent. There was also much interest in improvements to our group insurance benefits and the first-ever electronic voting for the pension committee election.

“By providing transparent information, we hope to inspire faculty and staff to work together to achieve the best possible work environment,” adds Juliano.

“Ultimately, we strive to be the employer of choice for our over 9,000 faculty and staff.”

The annual report supports the University of Manitoba’s priority to build an outstanding learning and working community, as outlined in the University’s strategic plan, Taking Our Place. The U of M strives to be an employer of choice, develop a culture of leadership and teamwork and encourage continuous dialogue, collaboration and consensus building.
