UM Management Fundamentals Program teaches new skills

June 4, 2019 —

Congratulations to the leaders who have successfully completed the UM Management Fundamentals Program.

Last Friday, May 31, a celebratory event was held to recognize the achievement of nine leaders who successfully completed the UM Management Fundamentals Program (UMMFP).

“It’s always wonderful to celebrate a commitment to strengthening the abilities of managers and supervisors leading our teams,” says Mark O’Riley, director, learning and organizational development, human resources.

“Having the chance to work with the individuals in a few sessions, I’m glad to know we have these accomplished leaders who can continue the good work at the University of Manitoba.”

The UMMFP is a certificate program in management and leadership offered by human resources and is designed for supervisors and managers or those who wish to move into a leadership role. The program was launched in the fall of 2018 and includes 30 hours of learning workshops and features peer-coaching.

Increased self-awareness, skills for building relationships

“The courses pressed me to grow, gave me the tools to do so,” says says Rob Visser, greenhouse manager, plant science. “I learned the importance of not just the policies and procedures of the university, but tools like the review and development plan, which has incredible value to take us to the next level,” says Rob Visser, greenhouse manager, plant science.

“Relationships are a bit of an art and I learned the art of relational leadership here at the U of M.”

Crystal Prettie, university travel program administrator, travel services, was as another participant who found value in the program. “I had the chance to develop my skills and learn how to manage within a unionized environment and learn new ways I could motivate and support my team.”

She added, “The program provided me with increased self-awareness in my own growth, particularly pieces such as the communication feedback loop, and how to use success indicators to manage myself. I also appreciated learning from seasoned colleagues. I would love to have more opportunities like this going forward.”
