Doering appointed Associate Vice-President (Partnerships)

Dr. John (Jay) Doering was appointed as the new Associate Vice-President (Partnerships) by the Board of Governors at its meeting on January 26, 2016. Doering will take up his new post in the Office of the Vice-President (Research and International) on April 1, 2016.

Doering has served for more than a decade as Vice-Provost (Graduate Education) and Dean (Faculty of Graduate Studies), a role he came to after heading the Department of Civil Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering.

“I am delighted that Dr. Doering is joining my team,” said Dr. Digvir Jayas, Vice-President (Research and International) and Distinguished Professor. “He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in the areas of administration, research, and engagement with a variety of stakeholders locally, nationally and internationally.”

Doering has a B.Sc. (first class honors) in Civil Engineering from Queen’s University and a doctoral degree in Physical Oceanography (Coastal Hydraulics) from Dalhousie University as well as several administrative courses from CHERD and CASE for university administrators.

“I am excited to join a new team and to continue to work with the entire University community to build partnerships to advance our mission,” said Doering. “I have worked with a phenomenal team of colleagues in both the Dean’s and Provost’s offices and will continue to do so in my new role.”

Doering is a licensed professional engineer (in Manitoba and Ontario) with expertise in water resources engineering. He is known internationally for his work in coastal processes, river ice engineering, and hydraulic models. Locally, he is known for his expertise in the infrastructure and history of flooding in the Red River Valley, for which he won an Outreach Award in 2011.

He is the recipient of many awards and honours for excellence in research and teaching.  He is a Fellow of Engineers Canada and the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, and has served in executive board positions with the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, the Canadian Water Resources Association, and the Canadian Coastal Science and Engineering Association. He is active in the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Manitoba (APEGM) where he has served as a member of council and the awards committee. He is currently is a member of APEGM’s investigation committee.

Doering’s term as Associate Vice-President (Partnerships) ends on June 30, 2019.
