Plan to attend U of M’s inaugural technology expo for staff, faculty and students
IT Day, organized by Information Services and Technology (IST), is a one-day technology expo taking place this May 10 from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm in the Engineering complex (building with Senate Chambers) on the Fort Garry campus.
The registration deadline has passed, but you can still attend any of the open sessions! Please contact Ghislaine at Ghislaine [dot] Alleyne [at] umanitoba [dot] ca or just show up to the session and sign in at the door.
IT Day is an opportunity for all staff, faculty and students to discover more about work related to Information Technology at the U of M. IT staff will share their experience and expertise, and some of the exciting projects currently in progress.
The day will consist of IT sessions in the morning and an open house/IT fair in the afternoon. Morning sessions, led by IT staff, are open to all and will include AI in the enterprise, information security, the evolution of service monitoring and IT privacy.
The afternoon will feature an open house with booths and displays in the Engineering Atrium demonstrating IST services and some fun activities. Booths will include the IST Mobile Service Desk, security awareness, AI in the Enterprise demo, media production, virtual reality, the IT development process, Garner IT research and more.
All university staff, faculty and students are invited to attend. Afternoon participants will also have the chance to win an iPad!
Lynn Zapshala-Kelln, Vice-President Administration, and Mario Lebar, Chief Information Officer, will open the day.
“We have an abundance of talent and expertise at the University, but we don’t always have an opportunity to share the interesting work we are doing,” says Lebar.
“We hope IT Day will help foster a community of practice that will build on our collective knowledge and wealth of experience.”

A university environment is inherently open by nature. It is an open environment, not unlike a small city, that is used by thousands in our community every day. Running a security program in this environment is more like museum security than bank security! Come on a tour with the Information Security team and you will learn how we strike the balance between open access to our vast collection of information and resources, while still keeping our most prized possessions safe and secure.

The Client Services team provides access to services that support the day to day business of the university. This session will describe and explain the processes and activities involved in delivering these services.

RM E3 270 – AI in the Enterprise and The Evolution of Service Monitoring
Using artificial intelligence (AI) to solve real work problems is no longer science fiction. AI is becoming more common in our daily lives, and it has the potential to enhance the way people use technology. Hear about how the University of Manitoba is investigating how AI can improve the student experience and help staff do their day to day tasks.
Did you know that the University of Manitoba has had automated computer system monitoring in place since 1998? This presentation will give a brief overview of our history with service monitoring, look at what we are currently doing to provide better business service reporting, and discuss what may be done in the future.
RM E3 262 – The Web Application Maintenance Team: History, Applications, Workflow (aka What does the web team do?)
The infamous U of M Web Team: Who are these people and what do they do? How do the different web applications work together and how does such a small team of people manage to keep it all going? Come find out!

It’s time to dispel the myths and urban legends about privacy and what it means to be compliant with privacy law. Join Karen to learn about and discuss the role of the Access and Privacy Office at the University of Manitoba and the office’s essential relationship with Information Services and Technology. Information Technology and privacy need each other like peanut butter needs jam. Like macaroni needs cheese. Like ransomware needs Bitcoin. And like Mark Zuckerberg needs a good lawyer.

Learn about all the infrastructure services that IST provides to the university and the technology pillars that support these services.
