Connect Your Commute: GoManitoba

August 30, 2018 —

Welcome staff, students, and faculty for another year at the University of Manitoba!

For those of you who are new to Fort Garry or Bannatyne campus, or are simply looking to change things up, determining how to get to and from the University can be a challenge. The cost of traveling alone by car may be too much for some, and perhaps choosing to walk, bike, or bus is too confusing. If this sounds familiar, GoManitoba is the app for you.

GoManitoba is a province-wide ride-sharing platform that connects you with a carpool partner. GoManitoba’s easy to use platform helps you find carpool partners, promotes public transit use where available, and matches biking and walking mentors. It is a quick, secure, and easy way to find your commuting options, simply by typing in where you would like to go. GoManitoba is great, because you can choose to commute with others from campus, or those who are simply travelling on the same route as you, including one-time trips!

What does GoManitoba do specifically? If you are looking to carpool with individuals, simply enter your typical commute times as well as your start and end destinations. GoManitoba connects you with other individuals nearby who have a similar commute. Addresses are never revealed, and the platform allows for organic connections. Whether it’s finding a place to meet, determining how to split the costs, or even who gets control of the radio, GoManitoba allows those conversations to take place.

GoManitoba has something for cyclists, walkers, and transit goers too. If you are looking to start cycling, walking, or taking the bus but are not sure how to get to campus, GoManitoba can help. First, the app gives you recommended routes based on safe and efficient biking, walking, and transit options. Second, GoManitoba provides a mentorship program, where other users can sign up to provide guidance on the best strategies for biking, walking, or taking transit. Once you connect with a mentor, you can try your route with the mentor before striking off on your own two feet.

The University of Manitoba is one of GoManitoba’s founding partners. By signing in as a University of Manitoba staff, student, or faculty, GoManitoba will automatically connect you with the rest of the University of Manitoba community and provide matches if they are available. As an added bonus, contests are run throughout the year and you could win by simply being a member!
