Cibinel Architects Ltd. receives 2016 NIRSA Outstanding Sports Facility Award

April 29, 2016 —

Congratulations to Cibinel Architects Ltd. + Batteriid Architects, for receiving the 2016 NIRSA Outstanding Sports Facility Award for the University of Manitoba’s Active Living Centre.  The first Canadian building to be recognized since 1988.

The Active Living Centre is a facility for the promotion and study of active living. Prominently located at the intersection of two major thoroughfares on campus, the building serves as a gateway to the University through which students, staff and the greater Winnipeg community will first engage with the campus and interface with the benefits of active living.

Despite being directly connected to the Frank Kennedy Centre and expanding on existing spaces and functions, the building addition provides a distinct contrast to the existing inward-looking facility with fully glazed façade and light-filled interior spaces. The concept for the addition was to create an extroverted and communicative building that emphasizes physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and social well-being by connecting spaces and individuals to activities and nature.

Starting from the basic premise that healthy living promotes an active rather than sedentary lifestyle, the interior spaces are dynamically organized with views to promote movement. Natural light is everywhere; vistas allow visitors to see people exercising and socializing; and members are given views of nature and the campus.

Cibinel Architects Ltd. have been highly involved with the Faculty of Architecture. George Cibinel, Principal, is an alumnus of the Environmental Studies program and Michael Robertson (1998 B.A., 2004 M.Arch.), Principal, is the Chair of the Faculty of Architecture Partners Program and member of the University of Manitoba Board of Governors.  In addition Cibinel Architects Ltd. annually offers the Cibinel Design Achievement Award for students in the Faculty of Architecture.
