Celebrating students

Faculty of Arts applauds outstanding student achievements

September 17, 2018 —

There was a feeling of celebration in the air as over 200 students, alumni and their family members gathered along with faculty and staff to commend outstanding student achievements from the 2017-18 academic year.

On Thursday, September 13, the Faculty of Arts held the first ever Dean’s Honour List Wall of Recognition luncheon in the Manitoba Rooms on the Fort Garry Campus. For 2017-18, the Wall of Recognition included 278 undergraduate students who achieved a minimum 3.75 GPA while taking a minimum of 12 credit hours in both the fall and winter terms.

Dean Jeff Taylor opened the event and spoke to the importance of bringing together the Arts community. “We were happy to start the new academic year by welcoming back our returning students and our most recent alumni to celebrate their past achievements and encourage them to continue striving for the best in all they do,” said Taylor. “Arts is a large Faculty with over 4000 undergraduates, but events like this can help to bring us all closer, making the university experience that much more enjoyable and fulfilling for each individual.”

“This was a great event and I’m so happy my father was able to share it with me,” said Richelle Chekay [BA/18] Psychology, who was invited on stage to receive a special honour for achieving the Medal for Highest Standing in a Bachelor of Arts Honours Degree Program.

Julius Chester, Arts Student Body Council President addressed the group and reminded students to balance out and enhance their academic education by joining a student group or perhaps consider running for student governance to help shape the future for others. Distinguished Professor Adele Perry, the 2018 recipient of the Faculty of Arts Outstanding Professor Award reinforced to attendees the value their education will bring regardless of the future path they choose and reminded them that their university has changed over many decades in both inclusivity and diversity and how furthering that change influences and advances society for us all.

In addition to the Arts Dean’s Honour List Wall of Recognition recipients, the event also recognized 2017-18 university and program medal winners, Undergraduate Research Poster Competition winners, Indigenous Awards of Excellence recipients and Student’s Teacher Recognition Award winners.
