CBC: Music played on ice, with ice, kicks off Winnipeg New Music Festival

January 21, 2019 —

As CBC reports:

The Winnipeg New Music Festival (WNMF) next weekend features Terje Isungset — a Norwegian musician who builds his own instruments out of ice — playing a suite of his original music, featuring vocalist Maria Skranes and percussionists from the University of Manitoba music program performing on the musician’s ice instruments, carved from blocks of ice harvested from the Red River.

Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra resident conductor, Julian Pellicano, and percussionist Victoria Sparks will also lead the University of Manitoba Percussion Ensemble in the Canadian premiere of Inuksuit, by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Luther Adams.

The University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Architecture’s warming hut design, Pavilion Sub-Zero, will host performers in a unique outdoor venue.
