Campus Tree Inventory Underway

October 2, 2017 —

Starting October 2, a team of arborists will be on campus conducting a tree inventory for the entire Fort Garry campus. Throughout the month, the team will identify, photograph and measure every tree to assess its overall health. The information from this assessment will give U of M’s planners, arborist and grounds maintenance staff an overview of the general make up and health of the urban forest as well as illustrate the economic and environmental value of the campus canopy.

The data collected will be a valuable tool for everyday maintenance of the trees and future forestry management plans at the university. In addition, this information is important in developing an understanding of the makeup of the canopy in preparation for Emerald Ash Borer, and the ongoing challenges with Dutch Elm Disease. The database will be maintained and continually updated when trees are planted, removed, assessed or pruned throughout the year.

If you have any questions about the tree inventory, please contact Kevin Handkamer at Kevin [dot] Handkamer [at] umanitoba [dot] ca
