Noralou Roos, professor in the department of community health sciences

Alumni and faculty appointed to Order of Canada

On June 30, 2016,  Gov. Gen. David Johnston announced that University of Manitoba alumni have been appointed to the Order of Canada. The investiture ceremony was held on Nov. 15.

Gregg Hanson, C.M. [BComm (Hons)/76, CA/79], has been appointed as a Member of the Order of Canada for his accomplishments as a business leader and for his sustained commitment to his community, notably in support of poverty reduction and indigenous peoples. Gregg is the retired president and CEO of Wawanesa Insurance and serves on the President’s Campaign Team.

The Honourable Sharon Carstairs, P.C., C.M. [LLD/07], has been appointed as a Member of the Order of Canada for her public service and for her work as a champion of palliative care.

The Honourable Warren Winkler, O.C., O.Ont, [BA/59], has been appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada for his contributions to the advancement of Canadian labour law and for making the justice system more effective and accessible as a former chief justice of the Ontario Court of Appeal.

Marie Wilson, C.M., [LLD/15], has been appointed as a Member of the Order of Canada for her contributions to the development of the Northwest Territories and for her work as a commissioner with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada.

The Governor General’s announcement also included two U of M faculty members.

Noralou Roos, O.C., is a professor in the department of community health sciences and a founding director of the Manitoba Centre for Health Policy. Roos has been promoted as an Officer of the Order of Canada for contributing to Canadian health care by developing evidence-based policy and for promoting and disseminating medical research with a particular focus on the well-being of children.

Michael Eskin, C.M., is a professor in the department of human nutritional sciences. Eskin has been appointed as a Member of the Order of Canada for his pioneering research, which has contributed to the success of Canada’s canola oil industry.

From the Governor General’s citation: “Michael Eskin has made important contributions to Canada’s canola industry. A food chemistry professor at the University of Manitoba he has conducted pioneering research on edible oils. His identification of the chemical, physical and performance properties of canola oil helped lay the foundation for its development as a marketable product. In addition to serving on the boards of several academic organizations and journals in his field, he is an esteemed teacher who has creatively used rap music to teach his students about lipids in foods.”
