2018-2019 academic schedule to include weeklong fall break in November

January 9, 2018 —

The University of Manitoba Senate has approved recommendations for the 2018-2019 academic schedule, including giving students a weeklong fall break in November.

Senate gave the green light to a fall break of four days that directly follows the Monday, Nov. 12 Remembrance Day observance, when the university is closed, leading to a full week off.

Some programs like education, art, social work and many of the programs in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences were not able to accommodate the break due to their current curriculum schedule. Students should check their respective section of the academic schedule to see if the break applies to their program.

The first U of M fall break was held over two days leading into Thanksgiving weekend in October 2016.

It was inspired by a request from the University of Manitoba Students’ Union, as part of a move to address increased stress that students reported during fall terms.

A review committee with faculty, staff and student representatives was created to examine scheduling constraints and practices, following the launch of the first fall break. As part of university community discussions, the committee received survey feedback from 638 students and 105 faculty and staff members last year, sharing their input on the academic schedule and support for the fall break.

Key recommendations and findings were presented in fall 2017, leading to the development of the 2018-2019 academic schedule. Among some of the other features of the academic schedule are balanced fall and winter terms of 62 teaching days each.

Fall term classes begin on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2018 and a one-day orientation is set for Tuesday, Sept. 4. Winter term classes will start on the Monday, Jan. 7, 2019 after the university reopens on Thursday, Jan. 3. The February 2019 winter break takes place the week of Louis Riel Day, Feb. 18, 2019.
